Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto 2013 Program
This summer for the 22nd time, Seiji Ozawa will lead the legendary festival named after his teacher Hideo Saito. Since 1992, musicians from around the globe, including other students of Saito, have journeyed back every summer to mountain-ensconced castle town Matsumoto City to play with the Saito Kinen Orchestra. The orchestra itself was founded in 1984, the tenth anniversary of Saito's death. This year they will be performing works by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Ligeti, and others. Opera, includes a Ravel double bill in a co-production with the Glyndebourne Festival. As always, the historic Saito Kinen Festival will be rounded out by a wide spectrum of other performances and teaching activities that include chamber music concerts, intensive chamber instruction for promising young musicians, as well as opera and symphony performances for thousands of Japanese schoolchildren. Detailed information will follow in the coming months.
